Application: P4 (Socket 478) CPU Cooler

     Vantec is back with another new product, A Pentium 4 socket 478 version of the Aeroflow, called the VP4-C7040. The Aeroflow heatsink is designed significantly different from the average heatsink, uniquely designed to get maximum heat dissipation. The Vantec Aeroflow also features the new TMD fans from YS Tech to cool their unique heatsink. This is one of the only heatsinks that I have seen that features the TMD YS Tech fan. This is a very nice looking heatsink and fan, but how does it perform? Let's find out!

     The specifications for the heatsink are as follows:

  • Power Consumption: 3.84 W

  • Bearing Type: TMD (Tip-Magnetic Driving)

  • Weight: 384 gm

  • Lifetime: 80,000 hrs

     The Vantec heatsink seems to be designed around the new generation of CPU coolers, which feature the solid copper core and protruding aluminum fins, and the Pentium 4 Socket 478 type retention clip. Underneath the fan, the core only extends from the base about 1 inch, with a circular hole also cut into the fins, which is quite a good idea, considering that the TMD fans do not have a center drive motor on their fans, so the air can move straight down onto the copper core, quite a unique idea. However, Vantec had to make sure that this heatsink fit all types of motherboards (Including motherboards with tight heatsink restrictions, such as the Asus P4S333) so there is less surface area on this heatsink. As you know, less surface area = less heat dissipation, so the TMD fan will make or break this heatsink as far as temperatures go. The TMD fan delivers more air, with less sound, and coupled with this heatsink, should produce fabulous results.

     Here is the test system we will be using with the Vantec VP4-C7040

  • Asus P4S533

  • Pentium 4 2.53 GHz CPU

  • 256MB Stick of PC3200 Xtreme DDR

  • GeForce 4 TI4600

  • Chieftec Server Chassis

     To maximize the CPU load when testing this heatsink, I will be using the Distributed.net RC5 client. The room temperature will be kept at 69°F and I will be taking the temperature using Asus PC Probe Version 2.18.03 with the built in temperature probe on the Asus P4S533. I will be using Arctic Silver III thermal paste for better contact between the CPU and the CPU Heatsink. Time for the temperatures!

     Look at those temperatures! Lets see what the temperatures are with the Pentium 4 running at 3 GHz, respectively.

Conclusion

     Well I have to say that the Vantec VP4-C7040 impressed me to an extent, however the temperatures were not the best. Now, this heatsink is one of the quietest I’ve ever heard, so that is a definite plus. I have to recommend this heatsink for those of you who are looking for a quiet, sturdy heatsink, however, not if you are looking for those super low temperatures.
