Kingwin Super Shuttle 5.25 External Drive Bay

Kingwin sent us over their external 5.25" super shuttle drive bay for testing.  This drive bay is an all aluminum bay capable of housing a 5.25" DVD/CD drive or hard drive.  There are several reasons why someone would want to use an external drive bay.  You could connect your super shuttle to a laptop for mobility or if you happen to need several drives you could connect a whole slew of them up to a computer.  The super shuttle is stackable and it's USB 2.0.  So, with a USB 2.0 hub you could connect way more drives to your computer than conventional motherboards would allow.  Most motherboards will only allow you to connect 4 devices, two per IDE header.  If your board has RAID headers, you could connect a couple of more devices.  With the super shuttle using USB to connect to your computer, you can connect a whole lot of drives.

The drive comes very well packaged.  The foam ensures the aluminum case won't get scratched or dented.  Kingwin gives you everything to get up and running, two-piece power cord, USB cable, USB driver disk and two screws.

Installation

The case is held together with thumb screws so getting inside is easy enough.

Once inside, the device you chose to install is exactly like you would install a drive in a computer.  Connect the 4-pin molex power cable and the IDE ribbon cable.

Whether you chose to install a hard drive or DVD player, Kingwin adds a small ventilation fan to help keep things cool.  An alarm and an LED will come on if the fan stops working.
