We've tested just
about everything under the sun in the past seven years. As far as hard
drives go, we've tested SCSI, SCSI RAID, ATA33, ATA66, ATA100, ATA133,
ATA100/133 RAID, Serial ATA, and Serial ATA RAID. We have even tested
all sorts of external hard drives and hard drive enclosures. USB 2.0 and
Firewire has done some great things for portable/external storage
devices, but you haven't seen nothing yet! With the birth of Serial ATA,
we were promised some great things in the future involving data storage.
One of those things is ultra fast external storage capabilities. SATA
isn't quite as flexible as USB, but it is three times faster, which
makes it perfect for external storage solutions.
I really haven't
seen much out there as far as external Serial ATA storage, but one
company is in the lead with some killer devices that deliver more
than what you expect. HighPoint Technologies has PCI host adapter that
not only gives us internal Serial ATA, Internal Serial ATA RAID, and
External Serial ATA, but the RocketRAID 1542
also gives us EXTERNAL SERIAL ATA RAID!
The
RocketRAID 1542 is a 4 channel, Serial ATA RAID Host Adapter and it is
compatible with all 32-bit PCI slots. There are two internal SATA ports
for either running a single SATA hard drive, dual drives, or running a
pair of SATA hard drives in RAID 0, 1, 0/1, and JBOD. Then there are two
more external ports for "e.SATA" (external SATA). These e.SATA ports can
be used for a single drive, two drives or RAID 0, 1, 0/1, and JBOD. Best
of all, the RocketRAID 1542 is compatible with all IDE hard drives, so
you may use SATA to IDE adapters if you wish. One more surprise. The
RocketRAID 1542 host adapter not only is compatible with Microsoft
Windows operating systems, but it is also compatible with Linux and
FreeBSD! The retail box comes with every thing you need; card, internal
cables, drivers and User's Manual.
