Application: Computer Case Light Mod
Provided by: PCToys
Review by: Scott
Review date: September 30th, 2002

Today we have another new product from PCToys.com, Dual Cold Cathode Light Kits! These light kits are similar to earlier kits we have seen, but these have dual lights along with some modifications to make them better and safer to use. The PC Toys Light Kits come in four colors; blue, green, red and UV (black light). The red, blue and green lights are very cool, but the UV light kit can be used with glowing products like rounded cables to give the inside of your case an alien like appearance.

Many of the light kits I have seen use a power inverter that has exposed circuitry. Exposed circuitry is fine to use in your computer case, but why risk electrical shock or shorting out your computer with one more exposed electrical component? The PC Toys light kits use an inverter that is housed in high impact plastic. This housing makes these kits much safer to use than the old kits, plus the inverters are far easier to mount.

The kits come with everything you need. Dual lights, inverter, 4 self adhesive light mounts, Velcro, switch, zip ties, and a 4-pin power connector. These kits are extremely easy to mount. You simply find some open space in your case to mount the lights, peel and stick on the mounts, zip tie the lights to the mounts, peel and apply the Velcro to the inverter, mount the inverter, install the switch, and plug it in to your power supply. Nothing to it! The only thing that you may find a bit difficult is mounting the switch. I took one of my covers from a large bay and drilled a hole in it large enough to install the switch. This is a perfect place to mount the switch, but it is optional. You can mount your switch anywhere you want, or don't mount it all. In the past, I have left the switch lay on the inside of Lian Li cases. Personally, I hate drilling holes in these top quality cases and the switch is perfectly fine left laying in the bottom of the case.

As I already said, mounting the switch is the only challenging thing about installing one of these light kits. However, it only took me about 15 minutes from start to finish. The end result is something that will definitely turn some heads. Especially the bright light from DUAL cold cathode lights beaming from your case! Going to LAN parties? Then a window and light mod is a must! Check out the results!

I find it amazing how quickly case mods have caught on. Nearly every computer store I've been in sells modified cases now, even the big computer chains like CompUSA. Amazing... If you are looking for a light kit, then this is the one you need. Dual lights, long wiring, high quality, easy to install, and damn cool to look at! This kit is easily the BEST one I have ever reviewed and I highly recommend it!

PC Toys gear can be found at all CompUSA retail stores.
