Hiper Type-R 580 Watt Power Supply Review

Last week we took a look at Hiper's first entry in their Type-R series of power supplies, the 480 Watt Type-R (HPU-4K580-MS).   This time out we will be putting the top of the line Type-R 580 Modular to the test.  With the Type-R 580, Hiper has pulled out all the stops to provide not just the high power you would expect from a unit in this range but also some new design ideas that take the modular concept in a completely new direction.  Lets take a closer look!

The Hiper 580 is one of the most eye catching designs I have seen in a power supply.  Like the 480 Type-R, the colors available include the Black Label shown here, a Red Label , a Silver Label and a Blue Label.

The innovative look starts before you even get to the hardware.  Every Hiper 580 Type-R power supply comes packed in a sturdy plastic tool box.  The design is both eye catching and informative, showing everything you need to know about this unit right up front.

Opening the box reveals a top tray separating the cable extensions.  More about those in a minute.  Its easy to imagine useful ways to put this box to work in the future.  LAN tool box, here I come.

The novelty of the box isn't just a gimmick, it also provides great protection for the unit with 360 degree padding.  Ok, boxes are good but lets get to the important stuff!

The box contains the same great Owners Manual as the 480, covering everything from oscilloscope ratings to actual tested voltages. There are cables for just about every install possible.  Thanks to the patented exTension Device Connection Cable technology the cables are modular also.

The extension cables work by adding just the plugs you need to each run.  This approach removes the clutter of extra cable length and unnecessary ends.  No more hiding those extra floppy ends for me!  The picture above shows a SATA extension ready to connect to a 12V lead.  The system provides for 4x molex, 1x PCI-E and 1x 4pin P4 connection stock.  With the extensions you can add up to 4x SATA, 1x Floppy, 1x PCI-E (for SLI), and 11x total Molex.

Each of the cables connects to the power supply through one of these connectors.  Each plug is keyed for the correct cable and voltage to make installing the correct cables simple and mistake free.

Here is a close-up of the cable end Hiper calls an Aviation Type heavy duty Enamel Modular Connector.  The cable slides in and the threaded ring hand tightens to secure the cable in place.  With the PS installed, getting these connections was much easier than you might think.  Each connector is also keyed, just turn it until it slides in and tighten securely.

The Install:

I installed this Power supply into my XION II Gamer case to replace the Hiper 480 Type-R.    This build includes 2 x 512 OCZ EL DDR PC-3500 Gold, a BFG 6600 GT OC, an AMD Athlon 3000+,  Seagate 80G and 120G IDE drives, and a Lite-on 16x DVD  Burner; all mounted on my Soltek N4Pro 939 motherboard.

Before we install this big guy lets take a closer look at the patented design.  Don't adjust your glasses, this unit will work in both ATX installs up to v 2.2 and upside down in the new BTX configurations.  Notice the PS doesn't have a voltage selector; each Hiper 580 is region specific, so watch your online orders!  This picture also shows off the Chromed 80mm fan.

The 120mm fan is also Chromed and looks better in person.  The 1.0 mm mesh body is finished in a titanium high gloss providing maximum airflow.  Hiper calls this design their Omnigrid System.

Here is a picture of the unit installed.  To run my Soltek system I only needed three of the modular runs.

On the XION II Gamer case, the screws for the 80 mm fan guard hit the case during the install.  Some slight modification is needed to get a even fit.  Here the case tabs were bent out slightly during the install itself.  Not a show stopper, but this could easily have been resolved by a recessed grill mounting.

With everything wired, I have only used two additional exTension to run my case fans and both of the hard drives.  The result is a nice clean and open install that is perfect for the windowed XION case.

This picture shows a close up of the exTension for the additional IDE Molex connector.  the short length helps to keep the install looking clean.  A similar set is included for SATA.
